# 644 for 100 shares to GLS Jameson. Signed by Asgood and president D.H. Moffat. Dateline Denver 1894. Not cancelled. CJ Kelly printer. Eagle and shield vignette. There is little to mar this certificate: a few pin holes. small discoloration bottom right. David H Moffat was one of Denver's most important financiers and industrialists in late 19th and early 20th century Colorado, and he was responsible for the development of the Middle Park area. He served as president, treasurer and as a board member of railroads, banks and city government posts. Over the years he had claims to over one hundred Colorado mines and nine railroads. Rico was settled in 1879 as a silver mining center in the Pioneer Mining District. 27 miles from Telluride. Exploration of the area may have started as early as 1861. The Pioneer claim was located at the future site of the town of Rico in 1869, giving the name Pioneer to the district. The district was mostly abandoned after a period of discouraging production, until rich silver discoveries were made on Nigger Baby and Chestnut hills in 1878-1879. The town of Rico (Carbonateville, Lead City) was established at about the same time; the Grand View Smelter was built in 1880. [Colorado Mining Districts by Dunn] Prag Collection
