This black leather holster was made at the Rock Island Arsenal for the 1873 Single Action Army Colt revolver. A Gaston pattern design was a departure from the holster with an enclosed flap. Today it would be known as a "Slim Jim" design. This one is marked "Rock Island /Arsenal/W.T.G." William T. Goodrich was a harness maker for Rock Island. While its appearance could make one believe that this is an ordinary Holster made for the Colt 1860 percussion revolver during the Civil War it is actually a Prototype Holster for a Colt Single Action Army Revolver manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal in 1892 based on a design by Lt. J.A. Gaston of the 8th Cavalry. Gaston further developed the Slim-Jim design for the use with a Single Action Army. Only 10 specimens of this Prototype Holster were manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal and issued to the 8th Cavalry for field trials. Because the feedback was mixed it was decided not to pursue this idea any further. Only 10 of these holsters were manufactured, surviving examples would be significantly less. The leather and stitching are still sound with surface cracks only. C.1890's period military. Perfectly usable today. Please see photo for details. (ref.
