This is a rare Rogers & Spencer Army Model .44 caliber revolver of which only 5800 were originally made during and following the Civil War. (c.1863-1865).This one has a period correct metallic cartridge conversion making it even more rare (about 1870-1880's). The frame has the "London Grey" case hardening which is very attractive on this firearm. "Deliveries on government contract were too late for the Civil War service, and in 1901 Francis Bannerman & Son acquired the complete government stock of 5,000, which accounts for the fact that this piece is quite often encountered in very fine condition." (Flayderman's Guide p. 314, 1998). The serial number for this piece is 534X on the frame and cylinder. The original firing pin has been removed but easily restored by a competent gunsmith. It is an.44 obsolete caliber of unknown origin . The gun wears an 8 inch round barrel that has a beautifully restored blue finish. Grips are walnut and show some age shrinkage.
