Roscoe Dillet (1890-1962) was a Montana rancher who lived and worked around the Ruby Valley. He attended the Montana Agricultural College in Bozeman and later worked for A.A. Linder, a prominent rancher in Madison County. This archive is a collection of letters written between Roscoe and his future wife, Ella Mathews. They discuss many different subjects in these letters including ranching, agriculture, family, friends, daily activities, and general town gossip. These letters span about three years from September 1909 to January 1912. During this time, Dillet was working in various towns in the Ruby Valley while Ella was living in Bozeman and Renova. According to newspaper sources, they were married in Walkerville in February 1912 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. In April of 1912, Dillet bought a 186 acre ranch just outside of Twin Bridges that one newspaper describes as “one of the most desirable farms of the valley.” Other people who appear in this correspondence are Harve and Ida Dillet, Roscoe’s siblings, and his father, C.A. Dillet. Mrs. Nora Mathews, mother of Ella, is also mentioned a few times in this correspondence. Most of the letters are accompanied by their original postal covers. These covers have postal marks from many different Montana towns including Blaine, Bozeman, Butte, Cardwell, Dillon, Pagerville, Renova, Twin Bridges, and Whitehall. These letters are arranged chronologically throughout seven binders (approx. 1 cubic foot). Please see more details in our online catalog. [Theresa Nielson]
