Wells Fargo & Co. Bank (Manhattan) check, datelined El Oro, Mexico, signed by mining magnate Rossiter Raymond March 11, 1918. Raymond (1840-1918) was the general manager at the time of the El Oro Mining & Railway Co. The El Oro gold mine was known to indigenous peoples as early as 538AD. Spanish records there go back to 1529. A city was formed there in 1787. Production rose to a peak after US and foreign investments in the 1890's and onward, until a slowdown in 1926. Rossiter Raymond got his mining engineering degree at Freiburg. He worked as the US Mineral Commissioner afer J. Ross Browne, 1869-1875, but left under the same circumstances as Browne- the US Government did not pay him his last year. Understanding the need for advanced information on mining to help investors and educate the public, Rayomnd was named as the first head of the new American Institute of Mining Engineers where he edited the Engineering and Mining Journal, a major organization mostly composed of people from the production side of the mining business, now in a new form known as SME. We have not had one of Raymond's autographs before. Date: City: State: New York HWAC# 78472
