Possibly the only existing large Rothchild silver ingot. This exceptional ingot is marked with the Rothchild & Son hallmark: "N. M. Rothchild & Sons/RMR" in a double circle. The serial number is R5170, with a 1935 date stamp inside a rectangle, 966 fine, 1098.3 troy ounces. It measures approximately 14" x 5.5" x 3.5" tall. There is an assay chip in one corner, sealed with an "R" inside a box with "RMR" in the middle. The Rothchild family is unarguably one of the most important banking institutions in the world today for the mining and metals industry, including the United States. Founded in 1811 in London, the family banking operation soon grew to international importance. In 1852, Rothchild was placed in charge of the Royal Mint refinery, a position it held for more than 100 years. The designation on the hallmark and seal of "RMR" reflects "Royal Mint Refinery". Today, the Rothchild Collection appears to be housed by a private company, and there is no mention of an ingot of this magnitude in the collection as referenced on the web. This ingot is also the first such piece seen by FH, and is a "discovery piece" out of the Chicago area. Date: City: State: HWAC# 78469
