Lot of 17. Many are Teddy Roosevelt-related. Photographs and ephemera. The Rough Riders were a 1st US Volunteer Calvary Unit formed by President McKinley after the sinking of the USS Maine to fight in the Spanish-American War. In order to find men ready for the Cuban tropical climate they would encounter, the government focused recruitment on frontiersmen from the Indian Territory, the New Mexico Territory, the Arizona Territory, and the Oklahoma Territory. Roosevelt served as a commander. The term "Rough Riders" was taken from Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. 1) Nine photographs: cabinet card of soldier at Camp Alger with a 45/70 trapdoor Springfield (by Roshon); mounted photo of soldier with rifle in studio, 7.25 x 5.25", unidentified; cabinet card of two soldiers in front of American flag with rifles and 30/40 Krag ammunition, smokeless cartridges, first time used in war (McKay, photographer); 4.25 x 6" mounted photo of three soldiers outside of tent with rifles displayed; studio photograph of soldier with rifle and ammunition belt (Demers & Son, photographer), 7.25 x 5.25"; 5.5 x 6.5" mounted photo of twin soldiers in camp, dated Tampa, Florida, July 29th, 98; small mounted photo of soldier in studio with gun and ammo, 4.25 x 3.25"; and two other cabinet cards of soldiers. 2) Ephemera includes: Teddy Roosevelt Wild West Gum trade card; postcard of the Menger Hotel in San Antonio; Scribner's advertisement for series of articles about the Rough Riders as told by Roosevelt; postcard of Roosevelt next to men in camp; two different Rough Riders 50th anniversary commemorative covers; another Roosevelt postcard; and pamphlet, "Roosevelt's Military Record," by Bridgadier-General Henry V. Boyton.
