This poll ax has its origin in the French Bay of Biscay to be a trade goods item in the Americas. This Bay of Biscay pattern round poll ax has maker's marks associated with the Jesuits of the Biscay region of France; (1575 at the Cameron Oneida site). The blade dimensions are 3 3/4 in. X 7 1/2 in. There are three makers marks of a circle intersected by an internal cross. This pattern appears three times on the left side of the blade (representing the Trinity?). Archaeologists have documented 32 variations of this theme on axes and hatchets from the French Wars and Fur Trade era in American sites. This poll ax has the thee maker's marks but only three of the incuse stampings are visible, possibly that the dies were badly worn or broken at the time of manufacture. Four variations of this mark have been noted by Kennith Kidd in his studies. They have been found in the Cameron (Oneida site 1575 to 1670) , New York; the Saint Marie (site 1570-1670), and found among the neutral Indian tribe of the Great Lakes, southern Ontario, form New York to Ohio.

This blade is heavily oxidized but the maker's marks are still visible. The handle is a replacement of straight grained hardwood.
