Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) Drum is from the 26th Service Battalion. The drum has the motto: 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' (meaning'Shame On Him Who Thinks Evil Of It'). It was known as the 7th Regiment of Foot until 1881. Two of the last campaigns were Afghanistan and South Africa. The drum is beautifully painted and lists the campaigns. The membranes, (drumheads or drum skins) are both torn. The unusual inception of this infantry regiment in June 1685 was less than a month after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion. It was formed out of two companies of guards at the Tower of London. Its first title was the Ordinance Regiment, reflecting the role for which it was created--to act as an escort to the Train of Artillery, the ancestor of the Royal artillery. King James II also called it 'Our Royal Regiment of Fusiliers', making it the first ever regiment with the 'Royal' title. The 1850's saw the reformation of the regiment's 2nd Battalion, which was then used against the Fenian raids into Canada in 1866, in the Second Afghan War (1878-1890) and the Boer War (1899-1902).
