Carsten Conrad Kohrs was born in Wewelsfleth, Denmark. He came to America at the age of 15 as a cabin boy. He followed the gold to Fraser, Canada and the California Gold Rush. In 1862 he arrived in California where he found gold, not only in the mines, but in his gold camp butcher shops and eventually in a cattle empire that sprawled over four states and two Canadian provinces.
