Rarity-9. 1863 (The date on the letter looks like 1865. This can't be, as the known dates for this cancel are all 1863, the conflict at Deep Creek was 1862 or 1863 and Gallagher mustered out in 1864). Excellent strike. Letter from Major PA Gallagher to Captain George Wallace. Gallagher was first commander of the fort. In nine months he had the fort built from scratch, quelled an Indian uprising, and signed a peace treaty with those Indians. Letter is marvelous, "I have just returned from Deep Creek and am very tired. I hope within 5 or 6 days to have another fight with the Indians south of Deep Creek. Reported to be 200 in one band." Also asks Captain Wallace to procure a saddle for Mrs. Gallagher. Detailed history of the fort, units involved, and Indian troubles at this time. Additional pages of research on location, names associated with cover, etc. are included. City:White Pine Co. State:Nevada Date:1865
