This is a Kentucky half-stock of walnut with a full engraved lock which appears to be original to the gun. The barrel flat is marked "S. Hawken". Brass cap-box Oval cheek piece with the Masonic emblem of Square and Compass. Beautiful craftsmanship from a master gunsmith at about .54 cal. A St. Louis gun built prior to 1845 with a lengthy tang, two screws and fully engraved. Two bands of gold at the breach plug and checkered wrist. Samuel Hawken arrived in St. Louis in 1822 fifteen years after his brother Jacob, and the pair operated separate businesses until around 1845. Jacob Hawken died during a cholera outbreak in 1849. Samuel reverted to stamping rifles with the marking on this rifle. Hawken rifles were carried by many men of the fur trade. Owners were Kit Carson, Jim Bridgers, Joseph Meek, and later Teddy Roosevelt. The stock has brass escutcheons. SN: N/A, JMD Oval Tag: 1979, Condition: Good, >
