Four different style assay memorandums from S. Molitor & Co., issued 1860, 1861, 1863, and 1869. Three are deposits at the San Francisco office from C.T.H. Palmer, Wells Fargo agent in Folsom. The fourth is a very rare form from Molitor's Montana office. Dateline Helena, M.T. (Montana Territory), January 4th, 1869 Deposit from the Whitlatch Mining Co. This form is clean but has been tape repaired along the folds on the reverse. An April 20th, 1878 EMJ article notes that Molitor had cast the largest gold brick in Montana's history, weighing 3,389 ounces! Molitor started assaying in San Francisco with his father, Augustus, who was one of the men originally involved with the U.S. Assay Office. He then went to Helena for the Montana Gold Rush and then to Deadwood for the Black Hills Gold Rush. Our company recently sold an S.F. Molitor tin ingot from Deadwood.
