Simeon R. Buford was a Virginia City, Montana, merchant, stage line operator, and rancher.
Backed by banker Henry Elling, Buford opened the region's largest grocery store in 1878. Buford's was the supply point for most of southwestern Montana, including the infant "Butte City." This lot contains: notebooks: compliments of the I - X - L Bazaar, Helena; Anaconda Copper Mining Company Washoe Sampler, Butte; Pierce's Memorandum and Account book designed for farmers, mechanics and all people (1891); compliments of Mitchell & Lewis Co. of Racine Wisconsin; two California Powder Works notebooks stuffed with business cards, bank deposit receipts, notes and advertisements for medical cure alls. Also personal correspondence of S. R. Buford. An 1888 letter to S. R. Buford from the Territory of Montana Board of Stock Commissioners. Letterhead of S. R. Buford & Co. dealers in groceries, liquors, tobaccos and Cigars, Virginia City, Montana Territory 18__.
