Sailing out of Long Beach in the 1930s, the S.S. Tango was billed as "A Night Club Afloat." Here are three gambling chips and an advertising flyer including the dinner menu. There were several gaming boats that sailed out of Long Beach. Converted lumber schooners, steamships and minelayers, transformed into vessels with names evoking glamour: Star of Hollywood, S.S. Tango, S.S. Monte Carlo. And the S.S. Rex. In 1939 Attorney General Earl Warren declared the boats the state's "single greatest nuisance," and raided the ships with hundreds of law enforcement personnel. The slot machines, roulette wheels and crap tables of the S.S. Rex were dumped into Santa Monica Bay. City: State: Date: Salvatore Falcone Collection
