California Gold Rush Nugget from the wreck of the SS Central America. Authenticated and encapsulated in NGC Holder #2102101-081. The SS Central America steamship transported thousands of pounds of gold from California, during the 1850s, to the East Coast, via the Panama Canal. Originally named the George Law, the SS Central America was operated by the United States Mail Steamship Company, formed by New Yorker, George Law and others, to carry mail from New York, down the East Coast, though the Panama Canal and up to to California. On her return voyage she was loaded down with Gold, straight from the Motherlode. On September 12, 1857, about 160 miles off the coast of South Carolina, with a belly full of more than 3 1/2 tons of gold, as well as 578 passengers, a category 2 hurricane dragged the steamer beneath the waves, nearly 8000 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Along with the treasure, 426 lives were lost to the sea. The $8 million fortune that sank with the steamer ruined several New York Bankers and contributed to the ensuing financial Panic of 1857 which crippled American Banks for several years. The SS Central America, along with her gold, remained on the seafloor for 125 years until the first successful recovery expedition in the 1980s. Nugget weight is .69 grams.
