Gold dust! No. 1647 Memorandum of Gold Bullion Deposited with assay results. San Francisco, CA August 17, 1852. This piece is an R8 with just 2 to 3 pieces known. Curtis, Perry and Ward ran the United States Assay Office in San Francisco and were directly involved with the striking and distribution of the California U.S. Assay Office $50 Gold Slugs. Joseph R. Curtis, Philo H. Perry and Samuel H. Ward were the three remaining partners after the dissolution of Moffat & Co. on February 14, 1852, just six months before this certificate was issued. They were located at 144 Commerical Street near Montgomery. This location was transformed into the San Francisco Branch Mint on April 15, 1854. Receipt measures 5 7/8 x 6 1/2 inches , printed with black ink on thin white paper. Has a tear and pin-holing on the folds and has been taped on the reverse. The receipt is for Gold Dust deposited by J. J. Simmons & Co. Weight before Melting was 2178 dwt, Loss in Melting 58 dwt, Nett 2120 dwt, Fineness .922. A fee of 2 3/4 per cent was charged as a commission, which netted proceeds of $1,964.74. There was another net added to this (from another assay?) of $3,234.56 totaling $5,199.30. Simmons & Co. are not listed in the 1854 Parker's San Francisco Directory, nor in Cal. digital newspapers. This assay receipt is critical to any collection of early U. S. Assay Office gold coins.
