Unique! Only known portrait of assayer E. Justh, posing in business attire. Signed on reverse. Card is 2 1/2 x 4 inches. Emanuel Justh was a lithographer from Verboca, Hungary who arrived in San Francisco in 1850. He went into the lithography business, then served as assistant assayer at the San Francisco Mint in 1854-1855. In 1855 Justh partnered with Solomon Hunter in the assaying business. They opened a branch assay office in Marysville in 1856. The firm closed in 1858, but Justh continued assaying until 1861 he sold his refinery to Kellogg, Hewston & Co.
