Artistic rendition of the U. S. Branch Mint at San Francisco, "The Old Granite Lady", in the horse and buggy days. 9 x 5 1/2 inch mat, the unattributed drawing is 6 x 3 1/2 inches. In 1867, Mint officials agreed to purchase land at the corner of Fifth and Mission Streets in San Francisco to expand operations. Construction was completed in 1874. Hailed as the "Granite Lady," it got its name for its massive two-story structure built out of granite. The Granite Lady's size, strength and sturdy construction proved itself when it survived the Great San Francisco Earthquake on April 18, 1906. (written in pencil front and back is "1869").
