No. 4697 Memorandum of Gold Bullion deposited at the Mint of the United States at Philadelphia, the 30th day of June 1852 by L.L. Berry: grains of California gold weighing 322 troy oz, worth $4022.20. 11 x 4 inches, light blue paper with red ink.
This is a pre-printed form showing "Grains, California," predating the Branch Mint at San Francisco. The Branch Mint at San Francisco also adopted the same nomenclature for a few of their beginning years.
Gold from California was sent directly t the US Mint in Philadelphia, or to a local assayer in San Francisco or an assayer at the place of mining, the choice of the miner or company, often ruled by the decision of payment time as well as security in the value of the surety of the assay itself.
L. L. Berry was a man involved in San Francisco horse racing in the early 1850's and would have known Mr. Ansel Easton of SSCA fame. (Cal. Dig. newspapers) Philadelphia Pennsylvania Franklin Collection
