Memorandum of Gold Dust deposited by Mr. A. M. Rosborough, dated Decr.(?) 8, 1852. Not numbered. Measures 7 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches, printed in black ink on light blue paper. It reads: Weight before melting 9 oz., 10 dwt. After melting 8 oz. 18 dwt. Loss in melting 12 dwt. Fineness, .757, Value per oz. $15.524, Full value $138.16, Fees $5.00. Rosborough is not listed in Bancroft. This is possibly the only Wass, Molitor Memorandum of Gold Dust bullion/assay receipt known. It is an R8 rarity and the likelihood of it being unique is very high. Its overall condition if Fine, having typical "pocket" folds and some minor foxing and a few very small light colored spots. From the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection; Ex: Goldberg Auctions 2011, Lot 1960. Wass Molitor made $5 and $10 gold coins in 1852. In 1855 they produced a $50 round coin, the only other $50 privately minted, competing with the ever popular USAO $50 octagonal "slugs." A. M. Rosborough was an Indian Agent for northern California.
