This is the fifth City Directory for Sacramento, even though the Title page states "Vol. VI", and is the fourth for Colville. Quebedeaux properly notes the title page is in error, and the proper volume number is IV. There is no record that there were further printed editions of this work correcting the title page error. Leland Stanford makes his directory entrance with the Stanford Brothers on page 121. 140 paginated pages plus ads in the back. The ads within the directory portion are unpaginated physically, but accounted for in the overall pagination. This volume belonged to Benchley McNeill, as inscribed on front fly page facing cover. McNeill is not listed here, or in the 1856 San Francisco Directory. This appears to be the first of the Sacramento directories to discuss many businesses in detail. Includes the Pottery works (75,000 items of glazed ware of all descriptions in 1855), stage companies, assay offices (Blake, Harris etc. of SS Central America gold treasure fame), mineral water companies (Boley & Co., established in 1850, 500 dozen bottles per day), banks (D.O. Mills banker and gold dust dealer). Polhemus does not have an ad on the back cover, like he did for the previous directory. 5 x 9". generally fine plus.
