Two Sacramento Directories.
A) 1997 Facsimile Reproduction of the California State Library's Copy of Samuel Colville's Sacramento Directory for the Year 1853-1854 together with a History of Sacramento written by John F. Morse. An inscription o the title page reads. "To my good friend, Ron Lerch, with kindest regards, Mead Kibbey, Sacramento, Cal. 13 May 1997." According to Quebedeaux, Colville's 1853 directory "constitutes one of the most important of all Sacramento directories." The history written by Morse include information about Sutter's Fort, early development, the great flood of 1850, and the Squatters' Riots. This reproduction has three contemporary woodcuts, one drawing, one lithograph, and two photographs not included in the original. Attached to the back cover, there is a foldout 1850 Map of the City of Sacramento. 9.25 x 6.25, excellent condition, like new.
B) Sacramento Directory for 1866 compiled and published by Robert E. Draper. According to Quebedeaux, this is the "first of three consecutive Robert E. Draper directories." Begins with a list of federal, state, county, and city government officials. This is followed by a brief history of the Legislature of California. Discussions and histories of Sacramento's courts, societies, churches, cemeteries, libraries, newspapers, schools, fire department, military organizations, railroads, agriculture, etc. The General Directory alphabetically lists residents, their occupations, and their addresses. A classified business directory is included at the end of the book. Appendix includes information about internal revenue, Sacramento and Pacific Coast post offices, and a list of county clerks, recorders, sheriffs, and attorneys in various California counties. Appendix also contains information about the history and current condition of all Sacramento newspapers. Business advertisements throughout the volume.9 x 6, excellent condition, new spine.
