Two Sacramento Directories for the years 1868 and 1870.
A) Sacramento City and County Directory for 1868 by Robert E. Draper. Quebedeaux states that, "Railroad fever ran high in Sacramento in 1868, giving justification, perhaps, for the first county directory which this is." First part of the book contains info about government officials, newspapers, fire department, courts, schools, cemeteries, libraries, societies, churches, railroads, post offices, etc. Directory alphabetically lists residents, their occupations, and their addresses. Appendix lists county clerks, recorders, district attorneys, sheriffs, and practicing attorneys in several counties throughout the state of California. Business advertisements throughout. The name of W.B.C. is inscribed on the first page, and he is listed as the county clerk elect on page 88. 9 x 6, excellent condition, archivally restored, text block rebound, boards replaced and covered with original paper and pastedowns, new red leather spine.
B) McKenney's Sacramento Directory for the Year 1870 compiled and published by L.M. McKenney. According to Quebedeaux, "This is the first of many directories by L.M. McKenney, who became one of the best-known publishers in California during the 1870s and 1880s." This directory begins with an overview of government officials, schools, courts, military, fire department, libraries, churches, societies, hospital, cemeteries, post offices, etc. Directory alphabetically lists residents, their occupations, and their addresses. Also includes a classified business directory. Business advertisements throughout including one that announces that the "Great Overland Route via the Central Pacific Railroad is now in complete running order from San Francisco to the Atlantic Sea Board." 9.25 x 6, good condition.
