Sacramento Directory for 1866: Compiled and published by Robert E. Draper, publisher H.S. Crocker, Sacramento (3) -201pp., including advertisements. Pictorial advertisements on pastedowns. Original half sheep and printed green paper boards, spine guilt. Spine ends worn, leather cracked. Small hole in pp.63-64 (either an early excision or a paper flaw), Overall, still in near fine condition. This copy bears the contemporary ownership inscription of Thomas M. Logan on the title page. Logan, a Sacramento doctor, is listed on page 102, and has made an emendation to his address in the directory. This volume is an early and an important Sacramento directory, the first of three compiled by Robert E. Draper. By 1866 Sacramento had a population of around 14,000. Draper writes that he made inquiries of some 4000 people in compiling this lengthy directory. An index at the rear gives listings for business by type, enabling one to quickly locate those listed in the strictly alphabetical section that makes up the bulk of the directory. Advertisements for several prominent businesses are attractively displayed, including the Crocker printing firm, Dale & Co. music and toy store, an undertaker, lawyers, hotels, and the Columbia Brewery. There is an update on the Transcontinental Railroad on pp.33-34. The directory is also valuable for containing an appendix on pp. 196-201 giving detailed information on some fifty newspapers including the SACRAMENTO BEE (still in publication today and noted in 1866 as "yet living and shows signs of prosperity") and the CHINESE NEWS. Also included are lists of state and county political officers, churches, libraries, schools, and more. In the appendix is a listing of all United States Post Offices In the Western States including California, Oregon, Washington Territory, Nevada, Idaho Territory, Montana territory, and Arizona. Quebedeaux, who calls this directory "very rare" notes that there should be a single leaf before the title page and another between pages 80 and 81. These leaves, likely further advertisements, are not present in this copy which is textually complete.
