Through a series of six letters we learn about an interesting period in the lives of the Basque sheepherder. The time: 1917, World War I. The instigator: Warren Williams on the behalf of sheep ranch owners. The purpose of the letters: the sheep ranch owners wanted a new source for sheepherders like Romania or Armenia. The reason: the Basques' are "becoming entirely to independent to be useful." The response from U. S. Senator Key Pittman: there is a war going on, are you kidding (written more professionally of course)? One letter from Williams and four from Pittman. He has signed two. Very interesting history from a significant time period for Basque sheepherders as they become more entrenched in American culture. City: Fallon, Churchill State: Nevada Date: HWAC# 99440
