This is truly an iconic Montana Stock Certificate. # 123 for 10 shares to George W Ware. SIgned by Charles Tausig and president pro tem DA Jannay(?). Dateline Saint Louis 1868. Incorporated Feb. 20, 1865. Not cancelled. 25c Certificate revenue stamp. Large mountainous mill and city vignette. Cut uneven. No edge, corner, pin hole of discoloration issues. Excellent. In 1905 Philippsburgh was described as the "smartest, liveliest and , at present, most promising camp in Montana Territory" [Missoulian] The ledges were discovered in the spring of 1866. "A large town sprung into existence (see vignette) and the Saint Louis and Montana Mining Company threw their money into the ground with a living faith that it would soon return to them in bars of shining bullion." This and other mines proved unsuccessful and and the miners left. Except a few who stayed on and a new strike a decade later once again promised great wealth.
