This work opens with a brief history of Mormonism [p.56-58], followed by a chronological list of events in Utah (beginning with the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847) [p. 59-64]. This is followed by a section that contains an overall look at the Territory of Utah at the time, including history, mining, social organizations, federal officers, local governments, public buildings, schools, cemeteries, churches, post offices, newspapers, etc. [p.65-85]. This is followed by the directory of Salt Lake [87-173]. A brief history of the Union Pacific Railroad [182-187] follows The remainder of this work is dedicated to Chicago [Ill.], and is titled: 'Chicago: Its Growth and Trade' this includes a brief history and overview and ends with a directory of Chicago businesses (including advertisements). A wealth of period advertisement. The publication of this directory was delayed a bit, because so much labor was required in procuring the information, and "it was also delayed on its transit to the printers by the heavy snow storms which impeded travel through the Rocky Mountains in February and March."- The Publishers. Flake/Draper 7757. Howes S555. Woodward 217. Very Rare.
