Lot of 4 documents, two pairs. Each has a letterhead for the Chemical Laboratory of the San Francisco Assaying & Refining Works as well as an accompanying letterhead for the Mineral Hill Mining Company. Assays completed in 1871 for the Yankee Blade and Great Republic mines of the Mineral Hill MC. Both signed by John Hewston Jr., chemist and supt. This firm succeeded Kellogg, Hewston & Co., who in turn succeeded Kellogg, Humbert & Co. (of the gold ingots from the S.S. Central America fame), who succeeded Kellogg, Richter, in turn succeeding, Curtis, Perry and Ward. This evolution is interesting as it spans more than a quarter of a century of San Francisco assaying businesses. John Hewston was a well-known metallurgist who had worked in the first San Francisco Mint in the mid 1850s. In 1871, the Mineral Hill Mining Co. had 41 mines/claims/ledges at Mineral Hill, Nevada including the Live Yankee, which was listed as one of its most important.
