A five dollar note issued by troubled banks during the Financial Panic of 1907. Signed by Homer King President. In January 1905, Homer S. King left Wells Fargo & Company to assume the presidency of the Bank of California. The Panic of 1907 caused a scarcity of coinage in the West where paper money still did not circulate. Bank holidays and the issuance of clearing house certificates eased the pressure on banks. These notes circulated through out the west coast, Hawaii and as far east as Philadelphia. _x000D_
