Five preferred shares of this company issued to F.M. Smith in 1912. "Borax" Smith formed the U.S. Borax Company in 1890 after discovering ulexite at Teel's Marsh in 1872. U.S. Borax promoted the 20-mule team slogan as it took twenty mule teams to transport borax from Death Valley to Mojave. The back of the certificate is endorsed by Smith but his signature is from a rubber stamp rather than hand signed. Smith was involved in the Key System and the east bay railroads.
