Territory of California. Authorized by the town council and carried out by John W. Geary. Fifty vara lot for Henry M. Lewis on the northern side of Tyler street near Hyde. Lot #1344. Mr. Lewis, who was a practical Jeweler and watchmaker, started in business on the site of the store he occupied up to the time of his death. Like many of the other old pioneers, he suffered losses by the great fires in the early fifties, but he always reestablished himself at the old stand and pointed with pride to his sign, "The Pioneer Jeweler and Watchmaker." The furor in the early days was what was called the specimen pin for men and brooches for women. Fantastic pieces of pure native gold were mounted as scarfpins, while smaller pieces were joined together and worked into brooches. Everybody had one or more of these, and everybody sent one or more East or to Europe to relatives and friends. In making these, Mr. Lewis realized a great deal of money, for the charges were high, though the material was plentiful. Damage/staining at folds that makes reading difficult.City: San FranciscoCounty: San FranciscoState: CADate:
