Early mining operation at one of the first major mines. Photograph measures 6 ½”x4 ½”, no matte, medium contrast—suffers from some yellowing and tends toward the blacks. The focus is good. There is a black streak and small what and black dots on the upper right portion of the photograph. Caption on the photo reads SANDSTORM. Photographer not identified, but probably A. Allen of Goldfield. The photo is consistent with his work. Two men are shown in this photograph working the Sandstorm Mine. The man in the foreground is bagging high grade ore straight into bags to be transported by wagon. The man in the background is operating a single windlass hand crank. Bags of the high-grade ore that came out of the Sandstorm can be seen stacked in numerous places around the photo. This is a great shot depicting early operations of one of the mines that started it all on Columbia Mountain outside of Goldfield! Date: c. 1903 Location: Goldfield, Nevada HWAC# 60851
