Memorandum of Bullion received at the Savage Co.'s Assay Office from the Occidental Mill. Virginia, Nev., June 27th, 1872. Three bullion bars, 965 fineness silver, over 3,000 ounces total. Valued at $5,293.74. Signed by DW Balch as assayer. Balch was the first assayer appointed at the Carson City Mint. He later ran the Comstock Lode Assay Office in Virginia City. The Occidental Mill was built in 1870 on the Occidental Grade south of the Occidental Shaft. In 1871-72, it had 20 stamps and a 50-ton-a-day capacity. The Occidental Mine was located on the Brunswick Lode. It was originally staked in the early 1860s for the purpose of producing lime. However, good silver-gold ore was located in a tunnel in 1863. 7.25 x 12" Missing upper left corner. Folds, toning.
