Five assay memorandums from the Assay Office of Van Wyck & Co. for five different Comstock mills: Union Mill, De Lands Mill, Central Mill, Marysville Mill, and Island Mill. 5.25 x 13.5" Four are in very good condition. The sheet for the Central Mill is heavily stained. Locations of each mill, according to Ansari: De Lands Mill, midway down Sixmile Canyon, 15 stamps and a 35-ton-a-day capacity; Union Mill, both one in Gold Hill and one in Silver City, both erected in the early 1860s; Central Mill, erected in 1860, located on D, Mill, and E Streets in Virginia City, processing the richest ores from the Central, Gould & Curry, and Savage; Marysville Mill, built in 1861 about 3/4 mile below Gold Hill; and Island Mill, a small Carson River mill, water-powered, bought by the Bank of California in 1868. Van Wyck was one of the key assayers for the Savage Mining Company. In order for an assay company to survive in the highly competitive mining climate, even during bonanza times, assayers needed contracts with major mines to keep their businesses alive. Van Wyck certainly had his hands full with the Savage, who had submitted their ores to more than a dozen different custom mills, unlike the Gould & Curry, who built their own mill in 1863. Before Virginia City, he worked in San Francisco and Aurora.
