Lot of 4. 1) Mariposa Mill Company. Very rare RN-B16a imprinted revenue. Issued in 1870 to NN Humphrey. Signed by "Bonanza King" mining millionaire John Mackay. Tape repaired spindle cancel, toning/soiling. The Mariposa Mill was located at the head of Sevenmile Canyon, south of the Sierra Nevada Mine, and north of Virginia City. Kelley reports on it in 1862. By 1867, the Bank of California/William Sharon ring owned it and it was called the California Mill. In 1871-72, it was again known as the Mariposa Mill and was processing ore from the Hale & Norcross. [Ref: Ansari] 2) Ophir Mill / WS Hobart, Bank of California. RN-B16a. Issued in 1871 to Riley. Signed by Mackay. Some soiling on left border. This Ophir Mill was sometimes referred to as the New Ophir Mill to distinguish it from the 1860s mill located in Washoe Valley. This later Ophir Mill was located on the Carson River. It was owned by the Ophir Mining Company. In the 1860s, it was processing Yellow Jacket ore. In 1868, the New Ophir Mill was owned by William Sharon and the Bank of California. From 1872-83, it was owned by Mackay and Fair and processed tailings. [Ref: Ansari] 3) Sapphire Mill / WS Hobart, Bank of California. RN-B16a. Issued in 1871 to Tyrell & Cummings (owners of Union Iron Works). Signed for Hobart by Raymond. Clean. The Sapphire Mill was built in the early 1860s and was located 1/4 mile below Gold Hill. It was originally known as JB Gagnon & Co.'s Mill. In the 1870s, it had 15 stamps and a 40-ton daily capacity and was processing ore from the Crown Point Mine. It was one of a few mills owned by WS Hobart. 4) Occidental Mill, Bank of California. Issued to AA Savage (who owned a hauling business in VC) in 1874. Signed by Bonanza King mining millionaire and US Senator James G. Fair. RN-C21b. The Occidental Mill was built near the Occidental Mine at Gold Hill in 1870. It had 20 stamps and a 50-ton capacity.
