Very rare assay receipt from the Comstock Lode Assay Office, Cor. C & Taylor Sts, Virginia City, Nevada. No. 644, deposited Nov. 2, 1876 from the Empire State Mill on account of the Ophir Mining Co. 117 pounds bullion for smelting and assaying. Signed by D.W. Balch and Martin. 3.25 x 7.25" Folds, light soiling, pinhole, small tear on right edge. D.W. Balch previously worked for the Gould & Curry Mill, as well as the Savage Assay Office in the 1860s. He also very briefly served as the assayer for the Carson City Mint in 1869. Balch was present at the infamous Nevada & Oregon Railway meeting in Reno in 1881 where opposing parties of stockholders got into a disagreement that ended with gunfire. Balch was among those shot and injured (the bullet went through his wrist and into his lungs). He survived. The Empire State Mill was located in SIxmile Canyon at the foot of Sugarloaf. It was in operation from the 1860s to the 1880s. (Al Adams Gold Rush Memorabilia Collection) Date: Location: Virginia City, Nevada HWAC# 57671
