1871. Rarity-10. Middle of postmark is struck but right and left are not struck. OFFICIAL BUSINESS has been crossed out. Manuscript cancel. Short history of Camp McDermitt. The letter is not in English, but one can decipher mention of Willistan Battery. Sent from hospital steward Frances Dressler. The hospital steward's description and responsibilities are found in The Hospital Steward's Manual†(1862). The steward was chosen from the ranks or from outside the unit in civilian life. He had to be age 18 to 35 and was appointed to that title by the Secretary of War. He was given the rank just above first sergeant. ?Hospital stewards answered to the surgeon-in-charge. Once appointed, they stayed in that position for the duration of their enlistment terms. The Manual states that the hospital steward "must have sufficient practical knowledge of pharmacy to enable him to take exclusive charge of the dispensary acquainted with such points of minor surgery as the application of bandages and dressings. Francis Tresselt first appears in the official records on July 1, 1871 when he is made a "hospital steward" and assigned to the Department of California. He was given this position as a civilian. On August 18, 1871 he reports to Camp McDermitt under the command of Colonel Wagner of the 2nd Artillery. He would be reassigned to Camp Grant in Arizona on April 8, 1872. He would serve as a hospital steward until 1876. Other forts he served at included Fort Shaw and Fort Benton in Montana. City:Humboldt Co. State:Nevada Date:1871
