United States Geological Survey Bulletin, Issue 455 reports' "The chief copper mine of Georgia is situated on the border between Wilkes and Lincoln counties in the northeastern part of the state, 12 miles from Washington which place is accessible by the Georgia Railroad from Atlanta and Augusta. The mine was visited by the writer in 1904 and was being worked in January 1906." The 1903 Copper Handbook confirms the existence of gold, "7.3% copper, 32% lead, with $4.00 gold and $8.40 silver per ton." More information on the mine is included.
