A library of 10 books related to U.S. Sen. Philander C. Knox, R-Penn., from his daughter, Mrs. James Tindle's personal library, c1902-21. Knox (1853-1921) was a U.S. senator from 1904-09 and 1917-21, Secretary of State 1909-13, and Attorney General 1901-04. He served under three presidents; William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Knox reorganized the State Department and pursued dollar diplomacy, which focused on encouraging and protecting U.S. investments abroad. He played a role in the Senate's rejection of the Treaty of Versailles. While still serving in the Senate, Knox died in October 1921. The library includes a set of two with Philander Chase Knox bookplates: "The Life of Whitelaw Reid," by Royal Cortissoz, Vol. I, Journalism - War - Politics, New York Charles Scribner's Sons, 1921, 424 pp.; and, "The Life of Whitelaw Reid," by Royal Cortissoz, Vol. II, Politics-Diplomacy, New York Charles Scribner's Sons, 1921, 472 pp. Both leather bound, light foxing on fly leaf pages only, otherwise fine. Also included are three books of speeches by Knox with enclosed identical letters to his daughter, Mrs. James R. Tindle, Valley Forge, Pa., signed by John R. Wright (possibly Knox's speech writer), dated Dec. 30, 1922, a little over a year after Knox's death. The letters, two with P.C. Knox letterhead in Pittsburgh, return address Office of the Attorney General, Washington, D.C., and one with Office of the Attorney General, Washington, D.C. letterhead and Dept. of Justice seal. Attorney General in 1922 was Harry M. Daugherty. All three letters open with, "Under separate cover I am sending you a volume containing the speeches delivered in the Senate and elsewhere by your distinguished father. I prepared these speeches and had them bound for my own personal use in order to have a permanent record of his national and international statesmanship, especially as it relates to the Treaty of Peace with Germany and the League of Nations." Two of the volumes are: "Speeches of Philander Chase Knox, 1908-1911," and "1911-1913." Both have detaching front boards, and some spine degradation. The third is, "Speeches of Senator Knox 1918-1921," J.R. Tindle book owner label inside front cover, 194 pp., staining on cover, otherwise fine. Others in the collection include: "Panama Canal Title, Opinion of the Attorney-General upon The Title Proposed to be Given by the New Panama Canal Company to the United States," Washington: Government Printing Office, 1902, 335 pp.; "Speeches incident to the Visit of Philander Chase Knox, Secretary of the U.S.A. to the Countries of the Caribbean," Feb. 23 to April 17, 1912, Washington Government Printing Office, 1913, 208 pp., light foxing, very little wear; "Addresses of Philander C.
