Gorgeous pass with vignette of paddlewheel steamer and locomotive crossing bridge. Pass no. 520, issued for 1890 to D.R. Thomas, W&TRR. Preprinted signature of general manager William B. Dunning. Black and red print on cardstock. Printed by Hosford & Sons. Some glue residue on reverse. Company operated on Seneca Lake, the largest of the glacial Finger Lakes. Their Otetiana Steamer was constructed in 1883 by William B. Dunning. The Otetiana was used for some time as a tour boat until it rotted through and sank at dock in Geneva in 1909. Another steamer, the Onondaga, operated on Seneca Lake until a fateful series of events brought about its destruction. In the summer of 1898, it was used as a quarantine vessel for the Joshua Simpkins Opera Company after it was rumored a member of their troupe had developed smallpox. The troupe took this all in stride and played concerts from the boat's deck. After their eventual departure, the ship was thoroughly cleaned, but rather than being put back into service, it was blown up on September 14th, 1898, by William H. Herendeenas. This spectacle commemorated both the explosion of the Maine off the Cuban coast (an event which preceded the beginning of the Spanish-American War), as well as a celebration of the end this war.
