Unique and important shaving mug from one of the West's most famous sheriffs, Seth Bullock. This mug first appeared on a major stage at Cowan's, Nov. 16-17, 2005 auction, where it was purchased by our consignor for $4370. The noted provenance: "Seth Bullock shaving mug - porcelain, with rim decorated with band of salmon colored paint, decorated with swags of pink ribbons, the body with worn gilt "Seth Bullock". "Bought before this auction in a local auction in South Dakota."

Seth Bullock was born to be a miner and western personage. Born in Ontario Canada in 1849, the California gold rush "famous year" that created the "'49ers", he was enthralled with the mining booms as a youngster. He was off to Montana as soon as gold was discovered in the mid 1860's, about the time General Custer was making his historic survey of the Dakota region for Uncle Sam. He was elected to the Montana Territorial Senate at 21, serving 1871-2. Bullock was elected sheriff in 1873. By 1876 his "gold fever" had taken a solid hold, and he became very active in mining ventures at Deadwood. Today, many mining stock certificates survive with Bullock's name signed as president. Bullock was appointed the first sheriff of Deadwood, restoring order to a town that had little in its infancy. Bullock was later appointed a US Marshall under Teddy Roosevelt.
