William A. Remer was elected Sheriff in 1892 and again in 1894 in Lawrence County, SD. Deadwood was the big town, hosting the famous Homestake mine. This appointment certifictae is signed by the County Auditor, 12/22/1892. Mounted on cloth. Nothing found in newspapers.com on Remer. He was Sheriff during the depressive 1890s, where silver prices had dropped precipitously, and mining in general was in a terrible slump. But in 1892, the Black Hills gold mines, and those of Colorado increased production over the previous year, defying the national trend. In 1891, Dakota produced $3.5m in gold, Colorado $4.6m, and California led all with $27.3m in gold production. (Rothwell, Mineral Industry, 1893)
