Sheriff's Certificate of Sale Under Execution for Nov. 24th, 1865, in favor of Maynard (Gold Hill banker) against CW Newman. Property is mining claim known as the "Bank of Hamilton," which is near the Yellow Jacket. Signed by JC Clark as sheriff. Two green 5 cent Nevada stamps at upper right and one 10 cent US IR Bill of Lading stamp at upper left. Folds, tears, some staining. 14 x 8.5" JC Clark was a cousin of mining magnate George Hearst. Jacob Clark came with Hearst to California during the Gold Rush, and then to Nevada with him at the beginning of the Comstock Lode Rush in 1859. There, Hearst arranged to buy a one-sixth interest in the Ophir Mine. This investment was the start of his mining legacy. In the 1864 Collins directory, Clark is listed as co-owner and superintendent of the Hoosier State Mill in Virginia City. The directory lists the other owner as Geo. Hurst [sic.]. The two are also listed as a partnership, Clark & Hurst [sic.]. In 1864, Clark was elected sheriff of Storey County.
