Two spectacular artifacts from the S.S. Central America ship's hull. 13 x 9" degraded wood timber showing splintering, surface erosion from direct exposure to the ocean bottom/water interface, with two 8.5" brass square, tapered spikes. Some wood degradation from deep ocean worms. (34071) . A second piece is an approximate 14", 1" diameter brass bolt in a degraded timber fragment, with the long end sheared off. In the former case, the original timber was 4" by an unknown thickness. (33872) The huge spikes would have attached another large timber securely as part of the ships structural frame. Recovered in 1991.
