1) Three pieces of a gold treasure box from thee SS Central America "Ship of Gold," "Garden of Gold." Dozens of wood treasure boxes were placed by Purser Hull into the secure room in the bottom level of the ship's hull, which we call "the gold room." Most of the boxes disintegrated over time on the ocean floor. But those that were buried received less oxygen, and thus parts remain. These three parts are all indicative of a treasure box in some way. We don't know if they were originally together. They came up with gold coins, dust and nuggets as they were carefully excavated from the ocean's floor. One piece is a corner piece complete with a red wax seal over an edge, sealing that part of the box in a tamper-proof method. Another piece shows the angular joints used to secure the corners of the boxes. One of the pieces is an end piece, showing the many screw holes for securing the walls of the box. 2) Degraded Wood From Gold Room. Sea floor wood and possibly some rags from the gold room recovery. Material is heavily degraded and is likely all from treasure boxes. Contained in a plastic zipper bag, material is about 5x4.5x1.5".

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
