This Shreve & Co. Silver Trophy bears the name of a famous American athlete, writer, explorer, journalist and war correspondent, Lewis Ransome Freeman. (1878-1960). Freeman moved to Pasadena with his family as a boy and attended Stanford University, where he earned letters in football, baseball, track, and tennis. He also coached football there before graduating in 1898. After college, Freeman continued in his athletic pursuits in Pasadena for another 10-12 years, but spent most of his days travelling. His trips took him all over the Americas, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. It was during this 10-12-year time period when Freeman won the 1903 Ojai Tennis Tournament in both men's singles and doubles, also finishing as doubles runner-up in 1908. This Silver Trophy Cup was presented to Freeman for that 1903 win. Lewis Freeman later went on to publish over 20 books and innumerable articles throughout his life, chronicling his world travel and his work with the U.S. Military during WWI as a war correspondent, as well as his later work, on more than one expedition, as a photographer for the U.S. Geological Survey. Shreve & Co. Sterling Silver Service is highly collectible already, but Trophy Cups similar to this one are rare to find and very valuable to collectors, often listed in the 4-digit price range.
