Issued by The Sierra Grande Mining Company, 100 shares at $25 per to N. Ellis & Company. Signed by George Smedley, secretary and Whitaker Wright (sp?), president. Has a vignette of a snow cover mountain and is dated 1888. Please see photos for more detail and condition. Mines located at Lake Valley, New Mexico. Due to the company's low-grade ore and problems with their milling process, the company was in crisis by 1886. The company was merging with the Sierra Bella Mining Company and funds were tight. In debt, with the mill operating at a loss, the company was appealing to noteholders to essentially roll over their debt of about $20,000, and for current shareholders to pony up more money. It wasn't looking good for the company (E.M.J. 42, 1886).
