Lot of two different from a series of Comstock photographs taken about c.1900 from an unidentified photographer. These two identify the mine in white ink on the photo. The first shows the Sierra Nevada in the background to the right, with probably the Utah Mine in the foreground on the left. The second is a close-up view of the Sierra Nevada. Both are 5 x 8" photos on 7.75 x 10.75" boards. Good contrast and sharp focus. Foxing, some stains. The Sierra Nevada Mine was located on the north end on the Comstock in Sevenmile Canyon and was its second largest producer. First staked in 1859. Located on the south side of the canyon below the Utah Mine. In the late 1870s, the stock soared when ore was found that was assaying at $300 per ton. When no profitable returns materialized, the stock crashed, which Ansari states "marked the end of the Comstock stock market bonanza days."
