George Washington Cable (1844-1925) of New Orleans, wrote of Creole life and became the most important Southern writer of the 19th century. He wrote of mixed families and miscegenation, and after 1885 essays encouraging racial equality, the south became hostile to him and he moved to Northampton, Massachusetts where this photo was taken. Cable was good friends with Mark Twain and often lectured with him. Signed "Yours Truly G. W. Cable." 4 x 6 inches.
